The Sovereignty of God
He Is Here, Take Heart
John 16
This passage forms a significant portion of the Farewell Discourse, the last time Jesus speaks to his assembled disciples at length. Here he tells them that “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me” (John 16: 16). They are understandably confused. Jesus goes on to tell them “You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy”(John 16: 20). Slowly they and we begin to comprehend this message alerting us to the end of the historic episode of the incarnate God. They and we become anxious that our Lord is no longer physically present. What are we to do?
Fortunately and graciously God has a plan. On several occasions Jesus makes clear that the Father will send an Advocate, a Spirit of Truth (John 15:26), a Spirit that “will guide you into the truth” (John 16: 13). Here seems to me to be the eye opening revelation realized by the disciples when they exclaimed “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech” (John 16:29). What did they see? What did they hear? Clearly Jesus has come from the Father and has returned to the Father. Yet the Holy Spirit is now present. In other words, God remains as present as ever. While not available through our tactile sense, God is nevertheless here with us. By way of the Holy Spirit, God remains here on Earth. We must not think of God only as a distant deity or Jesus as a transient form of God for a time and for a time later to return; God is here now. Thank you Heavenly Father for staying here with your children as we navigate this world. Thank you for being so near as our next heartbeat.
